Gallium Phosphide–Diamond Hybrid Platform Enhances Quantum Light–Matter Interaction

Researchers integrated gallium phosphide (GaP) nanophotonic cavities onto diamond substrates via a stamp-transfer process, enhancing quantum optical interactions with diamond color centers. The devices were first fabricated in a GaP thin film on a carrier using electron-beam lithography, screened spectroscopically, and then transferred; the experiments achieved cooperativity greater than 1. The platform could serve as a light–matter interface in quantum networks.

Why we recommend it: The original article describes the heterogeneous integration process and the screening-and-transfer workflow, offering useful guidance for fabricating diamond color-center quantum photonic devices.

Chip-Scale Optical Ring Laser Gyroscope Detects Slow Rotation of 37 Degrees per Hour

A team from UCSB and Caltech has published an account in Optics Letters of a chip-scale optical ring laser gyroscope capable of measuring rotations as slow as 37 degrees per hour, approaching Earth's rotation rate of 15 degrees per hour. The device is based on a low-noise Brillouin laser built on a silicon nitride waveguide photonic integrated circuit, can be fabricated with standard CMOS processes, and requires only milliwatt-level optical power. Its sensitivity is nearly 2,000 times better than the team's earlier device.

Why we recommend it: That is nearly a 2,000-fold improvement over the team's earlier silicon nitride Brillouin gyroscope, which measured 72,000 degrees per hour, and indicates how far on-chip optical gyroscopes still are from navigation-grade applications.

HMI, a Spaceborne High-Precision Greenhouse Gas Imager Developed by AIOFM, Returns First On-Orbit Data

The High-precision Main Greenhouse gas Imaging instrument (HMI) aboard the Pujiang-4 satellite began imaging on September 27 and downlinked its first data. The instrument's developer, Xiong Wei's team at the Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (AIOFM), conducted a preliminary assessment showing that the payload's functions and performance meet design requirements. HMI uses an information modulation technique combining spatial imaging and spectral interferometry; in a 520 km orbit it acquires hyperspectral data with a 30 km swath, spatial resolution better than 400 m, and spectral resolution better than 0.125 nm. Based on the first data, the team preliminarily estimated the methane emission rate of the Bogatyr open-pit mine in Kazakhstan at about 27.52±1.70 tons per hour.

Why we recommend it: The original article gives HMI's swath width, spatial resolution and spectral resolution, and uses the first data to estimate methane emission rates at a mining site, showing the on-orbit performance of the combined spatial imaging and spectral interferometry scheme.
