Russell Center Launches International Cooperation Innovation Team Project on Hollow-Core Fiber

The National Natural Science Foundation of China international cooperation innovation team project, led by the Russell Center for Advanced Lightwave Science at the Hangzhou Institute of Optics and Mechanics, was launched at the institute on February 8. The project is headed by Professor Philip Russell, with Professor Wang Pengfei's team at Northeast Normal University as the collaborating institution, and runs from January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2028. Focusing on hollow-core fiber, the project addresses challenges such as balancing low loss with high mode purity, controlling broadband ultraviolet pulses, and insufficient mid-infrared pulse performance, through research on optical fiber microstructure design and ultraviolet-to-mid-infrared ultrafast laser technology.

Fujia Gallium and Shanghai Institute of Optics and Mechanics Report 4-Inch VB-Method Gallium Oxide Single Crystal

A team from Fujia Gallium and the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, published a paper in CrystEngComm reporting the preparation of (100)-oriented gallium oxide single crystals with a diameter of 4 inches and a thickness exceeding 30 mm using the vertical Bridgman (VB) method. Tests showed wafer HRXRD full width at half maximum of 49.6-64.8 arcsec, and the paper states that the crystals have high crystalline quality and good structural uniformity. The team had previously produced 8-inch gallium oxide single crystals using the VB method.

Guangzai Technology CO2 LiDAR Used to Validate High-Resolution Urban Carbon Emission Model

Guangzai Technology, an incubated company of the Hangzhou Institute of Optics and Mechanics, collaborated with the University of Cambridge, Southeast University and others to publish a paper in Sustainable Cities and Society, proposing SCE-Model, a spatiotemporal carbon emission model optimized by machine learning and validated by LiDAR. The model output is highly consistent with coherent differential absorption LiDAR observations (R² = 0.79; ±5 ppm), enabling hourly, block-level carbon emission mapping.

Russell Center and Partners Report in Optica: Hollow-Core Photonic Crystal Fiber Enables Flexible Delivery of Near-Watt, Hundred-Femtosecond 2.8 µm Mid-Infrared Pulses

The Russell Advanced Lightwave Science Center at the Hangzhou Institute of Optics and Mechanics, together with the Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study of UCAS, the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Mechanics, and IRFIBER (Ningbo) Optoelectronics Co., Ltd., published a paper in Optica on delivering near-watt, hundred-femtosecond mid-infrared pulses in the 2.8 µm band through a 5 m-long hollow-core photonic crystal fiber with a single-core, eight-ring structure. After evacuation, overall efficiency exceeded 70%, the output was a near-diffraction-limited Gaussian spot, and the fundamental-mode energy fraction exceeded 95%.

Why we recommend it: The paper gives efficiency, pulse duration, peak power and fundamental-mode fraction, and compares the fiber with free-space optics and solid-core fluoride fiber, making it easier to judge the applicability of hollow-core fiber to mid-infrared ultrafast delivery.

Fujia Gallium MBE Gallium Oxide Epitaxial Films Match World-Leading Electrical Performance, Published in Materials Today Physics

A team led by Zhang Hongliang at Xiamen University systematically studied the electrical transport properties of gallium oxide epitaxial films prepared by Fujia Gallium using MBE, with results showing electrical performance on par with the best reported by Japan's NCT and the United States' UCSB teams. Fujia Gallium's UID Ga2O3 films can have background carrier concentrations controlled to 1.6×10^16 cm^-3, room-temperature electron mobility as high as 129 cm^2 V^-1 s^-1, and, after Sn doping, carrier concentrations tunable from 1.7×10^17 to 2.8×10^19 cm^-3.

Progress in Passively Mode-Locked Laser Technology with Ring Cavities at Suzhou Institute of Nano-Tech

A team at the Suzhou Institute of Nano-Tech, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has developed a theoretical model for PML-SRLs, revealing that operating states are governed by the temporal balance of gain and loss. The model combines time-domain traveling-wave equations with partial differential equations for carrier density, examining the relationship among SOA carrier accumulation rate, SA carrier lifetime and ring-cavity round-trip time. The work, published in Optics Express, also found that an SOA with a narrow gain spectrum and a short resonator configuration can merge output pulses to yield high-energy optical pulses.

Why we recommend it: Putting gain, absorber and cavity round-trip time into a unified dynamic model offers transferable design insight for understanding mode-locking states and pulse merging in semiconductor ring cavities.
