On April 27, six students from Yongxing Middle School, full of curiosity and aspiration for science, stepped through the doors of the Hangzhou Institute of Optics and began a distinctive social practice visit.

Exhibition Hall Visit: A First Glimpse of the Optoelectronics World

The event began with a tour of the Hangzhou Institute of Optics exhibition hall. The advanced optoelectronics achievements on display stood like monuments to technology, quietly telling the story of the wonder and power of optics. The guide's clear, accessible explanations brought difficult optoelectronics principles to life, and the students felt as if they had entered a fantastical world of light and electricity, their understanding of optics sharpening from vague to clear.

After the brief but fascinating tour, the entire group posed for a commemorative photo at the exhibition hall entrance. The photo will serve as a treasured memory, capturing each student's enthusiasm and aspiration for scientific exploration.

Russell Center: Getting Close to Cutting-Edge Technology

Leaving the exhibition hall, the students headed to the Russell Center under the guidance of the person in charge, observing the institute's research environment and advanced equipment up close. As the introduction to next-generation optical fiber unfolded, the students seemed to glimpse the future of technology. With its ultra-low loss and ultra-high bandwidth, this optical fiber is reshaping the communications landscape. Their eyes filled with surprise and curiosity, and dreams of a career in technology took root in their hearts.

Science Class Builds a Strong Knowledge Foundation

A science class themed "Optical Fiber Communication" got underway. Instructor Luo Zhuozhao began with the history of communications, guiding students through the long river of communication methods from ancient to modern times. From beacon fires and smoke signals to carrier pigeons, from the clicks of the telegraph to the digital flashes of pagers, and on to the convenience of smartphone communication, students experienced the pulse of technological progress firsthand.

The class kept building to a climax, packed with substance. Luo focused on the mysteries of optical fiber. From 5G communications to transoceanic communication networks, from the absolute security of quantum optical fiber communication to breakthroughs in new optical fiber materials, students were amazed by the broad application prospects of optical fiber communication.

Q&A Session Expands the Boundaries of Thinking

After the science class, a Q&A session began. Students raised questions one by one, drawing on what they had learned and what was on their minds, and Luo answered them patiently as the atmosphere grew lively. Through the exchange, the reach of knowledge kept expanding and sparks of thinking flew among the students.

This hands-on visit by students of Yongxing Middle School to the Hangzhou Institute of Optics and Mechanics was a chapter where knowledge was passed on and dreams were planted. For the students, it was a brand-new exploration beyond the classroom and a starting point on the road of science; for the Hangzhou Institute of Optics and Mechanics, it was an act of responsibility in science outreach and a heartfelt hope for the future of research. We look forward to more students stepping into the halls of research, pursuing their dreams in science and technology, and drawing the blueprint of the future together.
