More Companies Enter Coated Privacy Windshield Glass

Smart dimming coating embeds an electronically controlled dimming film within the glass interlayer, using applied voltage to regulate transparency and switch between a highly transparent state and a frosted privacy state.

Coated privacy windshield glass is a specialty automotive glass in which a functional thin film is formed on the surface or within the interlayer of the windshield through magnetron vacuum sputtering and other coating processes, giving the glass privacy-protection properties.

The privacy-protection function of coated privacy windshield glass is achieved mainly through two technical routes. The first is one-way vision coating, which applies a special optical film layer to the glass surface and uses the reflection and refraction of light to create a one-way vision effect: people outside cannot see into the vehicle, while occupants can clearly see out. The second is smart dimming coating, which embeds an electronically controlled dimming film within the glass interlayer and uses applied voltage to regulate transparency, switching between a highly transparent state and a frosted privacy state.

According to the "2026-2030 Global and China Coated Privacy Windshield Glass Industry Research and 15th Five-Year Plan Analysis Report" released by SICI Industry Research Center, of the two technical routes for coated privacy windshield glass, one-way vision coating technology offers only one-way vision, mainly serving privacy needs with limited thermal insulation performance; smart dimming coating technology provides privacy protection while also delivering sound insulation, thermal insulation, dimming and other functions, better meeting the needs of vehicle intelligence and multifunctional windshield development, and has become a key development direction for the automotive coated privacy windshield glass industry.

Among companies positioning themselves in China's coated privacy windshield glass market, Taibao Yueda Automotive Glass Co., Ltd. has launched a coated windshield with a functional film layer on the surface that combines light transmission, thermal insulation and anti-glare functions; Fuyao Glass has introduced products including LC dye liquid crystal full-area dimming glass, PDLC multi-level dimming panoramic roof, and EC electrochromic glass; Haiyou Advanced Materials has rolled out a PDCLC solution that adds an in-house developed dye to the existing PDLC technology, giving it a gray-black tone when unpowered.

A number of vehicles in China already use coated privacy windshield glass, including the IM L6, Yangwang U8L, Xiaomi SU7, Xiaomi YU7 and AITO M9. For example, the Xiaomi YU7 uses a multi-layer silver film coating process on the inner layer of the glass to effectively reflect infrared radiation, and its windshield uses three layers of silver coating to achieve a 97.6% infrared rejection rate; the AI dimming privacy glass jointly developed by XPeng and Fuyao Glass has entered mass production, with a light transmittance adjustment range of 0.6%~16%, and in its dark state it blocks 99.9% of ultraviolet light and 99.4% of visible light.

Industry analysts at Xinsijie say that China's standards and regulations for coated privacy windshield glass are also steadily improving, including Intelligent Dimmable Glass for Automobiles Part 2: Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal Dimmable Glass (GB/T 46023.2-2025), Intelligent Dimmable Glass for Automobiles Part 3: Suspended Particle Dimmable Glass (GB/T 46023.3-2025), Test and Evaluation Methods for Optical and Thermal Comfort of Automotive Glass (GB/T 46021-2025), and Intelligent Dimmable Glass for Automobiles Part 1: Organic Electrochromic Glass (GB/T 46023.1-2025). These provide support for the standardized development of China's coated privacy windshield glass industry.
