Fluorinated photosensitive polyimide enables direct photolithographic patterning and offers superior dielectric and optical properties.
By using fluorine-containing monomers, fluorinated photosensitive polyimide gains the ability to be patterned directly by photolithography, while further optimizing the material's dielectric, optical, and solubility properties. However, increasing the fluorine content also reduces the product's adhesion and glass transition temperature.
Fluorinated photosensitive polyimide, or FPSPI, is one of the subcategories of photosensitive polyimide (PSPI). It is an advanced polymer material in which both fluorine-containing groups and photosensitive functional groups are introduced into the polyimide (PI) molecular chain.
According to the "2026-2030 Global and China Fluorinated Photosensitive Polyimide (FPSPI) Industry Research and 15th Five-Year Plan Analysis Report" released by SSI Industry Research Center, the introduction of low-polarity fluorine-containing groups gives fluorinated photosensitive polyimide several distinctive properties: first, a low dielectric constant that meets the insulation needs of high-frequency communication chips; second, low absorption in the near-infrared region, excellent transparency, low moisture absorption, and good solubility in organic solvents, meeting the needs of the optical communications sector.
Fluorinated photosensitive polyimide can be synthesized from 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride and 1,5-bis(aminophenyl)-1,4-pentadien-3-one as raw materials. The main difference between fluorinated photosensitive polyimide and fluorinated polyimide (FPI) is this: fluorinated polyimide gains good transparency and low dielectric properties through fluorination modification, but has no photosensitive characteristics, and is used mainly in liquid crystal films, optoelectronic components, separation membranes, and similar areas; fluorinated photosensitive polyimide adds photosensitive patterning functionality on top of fluorinated polyimide, enabling micron-scale fine patterns to be formed through photolithography processes.
Downstream applications of fluorinated photosensitive polyimide include high-tech industries such as semiconductor packaging, display panels, and optical communications. In semiconductors, fluorinated photosensitive polyimide serves as an advanced packaging material for surface protection layers, bump passivation layers, and redistribution layers in wafer-level packaging. It can simplify multilayer wiring processes and achieve low dielectric loss for high-frequency, high-speed signal transmission, making it a key material for 2.5D/3D advanced packaging. In OLED displays, fluorinated photosensitive polyimide is one of the key materials in AMOLED display processes and can be used across three process layers: the planarization layer, pixel definition layer, and support layer.
Analysts at SSI Industry Research say fluorinated photosensitive polyimide is a high-end subcategory of photosensitive polyimide (PSPI), and its market continues to grow on the back of rapid development in advanced packaging and OLED displays. From 2021 to 2025, the global photosensitive polyimide (PSPI) photoresist market posted a compound annual growth rate of 12.5%. China's semiconductor and display panel industries are developing rapidly, and domestic substitution of photosensitive polyimide (PSPI) photoresist is accelerating. Companies with relevant layouts include Beijing Bayi Space LCD Technology Co., Ltd. and Hubei Dinglong Holding Co., Ltd., but demand for high-end products remains heavily dependent on imports. From this perspective, China's fluorinated photosensitive polyimide industry has significant room for growth.
