Changchun Institute of Optics Boosts Machine Olfaction Gas Classification Accuracy with Light in Bimodal Neuromorphic Device

A team led by researcher Li Shaojuan at the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics built a visual-olfactory bimodal neuromorphic device based on a MoS2/SnS2 floating-gate heterostructure. It responds to both optical and gas signals and fuses them at the device level; the results were published in Advanced Materials. The device has an active area of 148 µm² and static power consumption of 3.4 µW. Adding the optical modality raised classification accuracy for 12 gases from 52.24% to 98.27%, while recognition accuracy for 51 gas mixtures reached 89.32%.

Changchun Institute of Optics Develops Goblet-Shaped Waveguide Mid-IR QCL with Low-Power Room-Temperature Output

A team led by researcher Meng Bo at the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics published a paper in Laser & Photonics Reviews presenting a mid-infrared quantum cascade laser with a goblet-shaped waveguide structure. The active region is formed by selective wet etching, eliminating the semi-insulating InP lateral regrowth process. A 1 mm × 3 μm device achieved a continuous-wave threshold power of about 1 W at 293 K, an output power above 27 mW, and a room-temperature pulsed wall-plug efficiency of 3.9%. A 2 μm-wide device maintained stable single-mode lasing across the entire current range, with a side-mode suppression ratio of about 20 dB.

Why we recommend it: The goblet-shaped waveguide eliminates the semi-insulating InP regrowth step through selective wet etching. The paper reports room-temperature continuous-wave threshold power and wall-plug efficiency, which can be compared with buried-heterostructure devices.

Changchun Institute Develops High-Efficiency, Color-Tunable Programmable Photovoltaic Windows

A team led by Guo Xiaoyang and Liu Xingyuan at the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, working with the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, has built asymmetric Fabry-Perot microcavities using double-sided dielectric/metal/dielectric (DMD) electrodes to create color-programmable semi-transparent organic photovoltaic windows. The results were published in Advanced Functional Materials. The device achieves a power conversion efficiency of 10.07%, an average visible light transmittance of 35.9%, an infrared rejection rate of 91.59% and a color rendering index of 89.8. The reflected color can be tuned by varying the thickness of the MoO3 dielectric layers on the two sides, covering most of the sRGB color gamut.

MTC-Designed Quantum Cascade Laser from Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics Achieves 1.2 µm Ultrabroad Lasing Spectrum at Room Temperature

A team led by researcher Meng Bo at the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics published a paper in Light: Science & Applications proposing a multistate-to-continuum (MTC) active-region design based on diagonal transitions, and used MOCVD to grow a mid-infrared quantum cascade laser with a single active region and an ultrabroad gain spectrum.

Why we recommend it: The diagonal-transition design from multiple states to continuum states allows several transition channels to contribute gain simultaneously. The paper reports lasing spectral widths of 1.2 µm at room temperature and 1.93 µm at 80 K, directly relevant to applications such as mid-infrared frequency combs.

Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics Proposes Polarization Aberration Compensation Method for Optical Systems Based on Plane Mirrors

A team led by associate researcher Luo Jing at the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics published a paper in Optics and Lasers in Engineering using the low-frequency polarization aberration generated by plane mirrors in non-parallel optical paths to compensate the polarization aberration of the optical system itself. In design verification of a typical off-axis three-mirror system, adding a plane mirror and adjusting its pose reduced the system's polarization aberration to 1/15 of its original value, with the full-field average phase retardance dropping from 0.0759 rad to 0.0050 rad, while wavefront aberration and optical efficiency were essentially unaffected.
