AIOFM Builds Digital Hydrogel Fluorescence-Enhanced Microsphere System for Amplification-Free Relative Quantification of CRISPR Nucleic Acids

The Optoelectronics Center at the Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics published a paper in Analytical Chemistry describing CrisprDEM, a digital hydrogel fluorescence-enhanced microsphere detection system based on CRISPR/Cas12a that enables amplification-free relative quantification of nucleic acids. The system uses hydrogel microspheres to enrich fluorescent reporter molecules, achieving a thousandfold-level enhancement of the fluorescence signal. A microfluidic chip then spreads the microspheres into a monolayer for imaging, and a K-means algorithm distinguishes positive from negative microspheres, with the proportion of positive microspheres used for quantification.

Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics Achieves Multidimensional Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging in the Second Near-Infrared Window Using Yb³⁺ Energy-Relay Hierarchical Lanthanide Nanoparticles

A team led by researcher Chang Yulei at the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics published a paper in Advanced Materials proposing hierarchical lanthanide nanostructures based on Yb³⁺ energy relay that tune ion luminescence lifetimes across 1060-2050 nm. In a Tm³⁺ system, for example, the lifetime can be continuously tuned from 654 μs to 11918 μs while the emission intensity at 1850 nm remains essentially unchanged. The team built its own time-gated imaging system based on an MCT short-wave infrared detector, simultaneously distinguishing six targets in mice with inter-channel crosstalk below 10%.

Rueminkang Launches DF600, China's First Fully Domestic Laser Fundus Camera

Rueminkang (Zhejiang) Medical Technology Co., Ltd. has launched the DF600 series, China's first fully domestic laser fundus camera. Using laser as its sole light source combined with confocal pinhole technology, the device delivers layered imaging of the fundus. It covers a minimum field of 130 degrees, with intelligent stitching extending coverage to up to 260 degrees, requires only a 2 mm pupil without dilation, and captures images in 0.1 seconds. Built-in proprietary AI algorithms, requiring no internet connection, identify the optic disc, blood vessels, macula and hemorrhages. The DF600 has been deployed in endocrinology, health screening, emergency care and other settings.

Google Recounts the Development of the Pixel Camera's Add Me Group Photo Feature

Google describes how the Pixel camera's Add Me feature was developed. The feature merges two photos taken sequentially of the same scene, allowing the photographer to appear in the group shot. The second photographer sees an augmented reality overlay of the first photo to align the composition. The feature relies on multiple machine learning models running locally on the TPU of the Tensor G4 chip. Add Me launched with the Pixel 9 series.

Four International Optics Companies, Including Focuslight, Launch Acquisition Wave at Start of Year

Focuslight, Synopsys, AMS Technologies and Oxford Instruments announced or completed acquisitions in early 2024, covering micro/nano optics, simulation software, laser systems and scientific cameras. Focuslight completed the acquisition of 100% of SMO's equity for EUR 75.5405 million, while Synopsys plans to acquire Ansys for USD 35 billion, a deal still subject to shareholder and regulatory approval. AMS Technologies acquired neoLASE, and Oxford Instruments acquired First Light Imaging.

Why we recommend it: The four deals add capabilities in component manufacturing, simulation software, laser systems and scientific imaging, offering a basis for comparing the different paths optics companies take to expand through acquisitions.

Spatial Light Modulators in Three Minutes

A spatial light modulator (SLM) uses liquid crystal materials to change the amplitude, phase or polarization state of light under electrical drive, modulating the spatial distribution of a beam. Amplitude SLMs use TN, VA and other modes, phase SLMs use ECB mode, and oblique incidence angles in reflective optical paths are generally required to be less than 5°. The device has been used in 3D printing and lithography, super-resolution microscopy, holographic imaging and atmospheric turbulence simulation.
