Dynamic Scattering Method Suppresses Speckle Noise and Aberrations in OCT Imaging

Researchers have proposed using dynamic scattering to control speckle noise and aberrations in optical coherence tomography (OCT). Speckle arises from spatially coherent light; removing coherence eliminates speckle but also sacrifices interferometric imaging capabilities such as OCT. The method strikes a balance between the two to improve detail in high-resolution imaging.

Optogenetic Therapy Partially Restores Vision in Early Clinical Study

Optics & Photonics News reports that an early clinical study showed optogenetic therapy can partially restore vision in patients with severe vision loss. Most adverse events were mild to moderate, with only one transient severe event after injection that resolved within minutes. First author José-Alain Sahel of the University of Pittsburgh said the results show that the visual system retains the ability to process new information even in people with severe blindness.

Why we recommend it: Optogenetic therapy applies light stimulation directly to vision restoration, and the original article provides safety results from an early clinical study, serving as a reference for biophotonics applications

US Army Research Office Awards $19.2 Million Grant to UCF-Led Team

A team led by the University of Central Florida (UCF) will receive a five-year, $19.2 million grant from the US Army Research Office to study light propagation and control in complex dynamic environments. The project, led by Guifang Li, will explore weak backscattering coherent measurement, inverse methods, AI analysis and multi-plane light conversion, with the goal of measuring and rapidly correcting optical field distortions when remote sensors or beacons cannot be placed. Potential applications include directed-energy systems, biological tissue imaging, laser medicine, remote sensing and free-space optical communications.

HMI, a Spaceborne High-Precision Greenhouse Gas Imager Developed by AIOFM, Returns First On-Orbit Data

The High-precision Main Greenhouse gas Imaging instrument (HMI) aboard the Pujiang-4 satellite began imaging on September 27 and downlinked its first data. The instrument's developer, Xiong Wei's team at the Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (AIOFM), conducted a preliminary assessment showing that the payload's functions and performance meet design requirements. HMI uses an information modulation technique combining spatial imaging and spectral interferometry; in a 520 km orbit it acquires hyperspectral data with a 30 km swath, spatial resolution better than 400 m, and spectral resolution better than 0.125 nm. Based on the first data, the team preliminarily estimated the methane emission rate of the Bogatyr open-pit mine in Kazakhstan at about 27.52±1.70 tons per hour.

Why we recommend it: The original article gives HMI's swath width, spatial resolution and spectral resolution, and uses the first data to estimate methane emission rates at a mining site, showing the on-orbit performance of the combined spatial imaging and spectral interferometry scheme.
