Hamamatsu China held an SLM industrial laser processing seminar in Shenzhen on September 8, bringing together nearly 200 experts to exchange views on ultrafast laser precision manufacturing and micro- and nano-processing applications.
On September 8, 2026, Hamamatsu China held the "The Future Is Now — Spatial Light Modulator Industrial Laser Processing Application Results Seminar" in Shenzhen. Nearly 200 experts, scholars and industry professionals from universities, research institutes and the industrial sector gathered to engage in intensive technical exchanges on SLM frontiers including ultrafast laser precision manufacturing, micro- and nano-processing, additive manufacturing and industrial deployment.
Many of the speakers at the event are heavy users of Hamamatsu SLM products — starting with the early X13138 model and following successive product iterations, they now use the latest X15213/X15223 series. This long-term journey from the laboratory to the production line, and from single-point research to system integration, meant the seminar presented not just specifications and concepts, but practical results that have been validated through optical field control and carried from design to volume production and delivery.
Focusing on Industry Pain Points, Shaping the Future of "Light" Smart Manufacturing
As the core device for beam shaping and optical field control, the spatial light modulator (SLM) is seen as key to breaking through the bottlenecks of ultrafast laser precision manufacturing. However, how to move this technology from the laboratory to the industrial production line and achieve highly stable, efficient processing has long been an industry focus.
Hamamatsu China has continued to collaborate with users on the SLM's high power-handling capability, optical utilization and localized "hardware + algorithm" service system, accumulating application experience from experimental validation to engineering deployment across multiple laser processing scenarios. This seminar aims to systematically share these interim application results with industry peers, build a platform for in-depth exchange among industry, academia, research and users, and jointly advance the deployment and expansion of SLM technology in industrial laser processing.
Peak Dialogue Between Industry, Academia and Research, with a Rich Lineup of Presentations
The seminar's speaker lineup was truly impressive, with presentations covering the entire chain from fundamental research to end applications:
Associate Researcher Zhang Bo (Zhejiang University), Application of Spatial Light Modulators in Ultrafast Laser Precision Manufacturing, explained how SLMs expand the dimensions of ultrafast laser processing from the perspectives of fundamental physics and process engineering.

Professor Kuai Cuifang (Zhejiang University), High-Throughput Femtosecond Laser Direct-Write Lithography Technology and Systems, focused on the system implementation and core light-field control for high-speed, high-precision direct-write lithography.

Professor Liu Dun (Hubei University of Technology / Wuhan Jindun Laser Technology Co., Ltd.), Ultrafast Laser Micro- and Nano-Processing Based on Light-Field Control: From Laboratory to Industry, shared key pathways and insights from scientific validation to industrial translation.

Professor Frank Wyrowski (Consulting Expert at LightTrans (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. / President of LightTrans / CTO of Wyrowski Photonics / Distinguished Researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences / Visiting Professor at Harbin Institute of Technology), Shaping the Beam, Mastering the Focus: SLM-Based Laser Processing — From Design to Delivery, presented the complete logic chain of beam shaping, from physical optical design to engineered delivery.

Special Associate Researcher Zhang Xiangyu (Beijing Institute of Micro-Nano Manufacturing), Research on Spatiotemporal Beam Shaping Additive Manufacturing with Ultrafast Lasers, explored new possibilities for spatiotemporal shaping in additive manufacturing.

Associate Professor Zhang Chenchu (Hefei University of Technology), "Femtosecond Laser Precision Manufacturing Based on Light Field Modulation," key technologies and applied basic research on femtosecond laser micro/nano processing using structured light fields.

Changpin Associate Professor Xu Shaolin (Southern University of Science and Technology / Shenzhen Shuoguang Precision Technology Co., Ltd.), "Spatiotemporal Modulation of Light Fields and Ultrafast Laser Precision Micro/Nano Manufacturing," focusing on joint temporal and spatial control to open new windows for micro/nano manufacturing.

Dr. Xiang Yang (Wuhan Huari Precision Laser Co., Ltd., Director of the Femtosecond Product Line), "Industrial Fiber Femtosecond Lasers Empowering the Upgrading of Micro/Nano Precision Manufacturing," discussing the large-scale deployment of femtosecond lasers from the perspectives of industrial-grade light sources and production lines.

Dr. Wang Zi (Hamamatsu China, Senior Technical Engineer), "From Components to Systems: Full-Process Laser Processing Services Based on SLMs," systematically explaining how Hamamatsu uses SLMs at its core to provide full-process services for industrial laser processing, from core devices to complete application support. It also offers an in-depth look at the technical concepts behind new products such as X15213/X15223.

From 14:00 to 17:20, from the opening to the cutting-edge discussion of spatiotemporal light field modulation, exchanges during the tea break were equally lively. What attendees care about is no longer just "the specifications of a particular SLM," but how to use light field control as a lever to push the process limits and industrial value of ultrafast lasers in precision manufacturing.
Hamamatsu's role is also evolving from a core optoelectronic component supplier to a long-term partner that works with users to define scenarios, iterate products, and refine systems. The real usage trajectories of several guests, from X13138 all the way to the latest X15213/X15223 series, are the best illustration of this "growing together with users."
The future is now
This gathering in Shenzhen was both a showcase of progress to date and a rallying call for the future. When spatial light modulators meet ultrafast lasers, and academic insight aligns with the pace of industry, what we see is not only the heated discussion of "the present," but the clear outline of next-generation precision manufacturing.
Thanks to all the experts for their in-depth sharing, and to every colleague who attended for their enthusiastic participation. Moving forward with light, we continue on.
